Springfield Clinic Urgent Care is undergoing renovation to better accommodate patients from Jacksonville and surrounding areas, as well as pave the way to bring all its urgent care services under one roof.

Renovations to the clinic at 1000 W. Morton Ave. are slated to be completed this year. Once finished, the facility will offer urgent care, occupational therapy, lab work and radiology services in one location.

Some of those services, like occupational therapy, are provided in other locations in Jacksonville.

“This will eliminate patients having to get X-rays in one building then driving across the street for therapy,” said Tom Fitch, senior director of facilities for Springfield Clinic.

He said the renovations will upgrade the appearance of the facility.

“Jacksonville is an important part of Springfield Clinic," he said. "It was a timed-looking building and it will look more modern and medical looking."

For now, oncology services will still be available at the Morton Avenue location, but with a $21 million expansion project under way at Passavant Area Hospital, it will eventually move to the hospital campus and be able to schedule patients five days a week.

“The end goal is for the oncology to move over to the (medical office building),” said Jen Boyer, vice president of operations for Springfield Clinic.

Construction started this week at Passavant Area Hospital on a 36,000-square-foot building, which Springfield Clinic will lease.

Despite the pandemic causing some restrictions like social distancing in waiting rooms, the need for care has not diminished and the expansion will help patients, Boyer and Fitch believe.

“Patient care is still going on and we continue to keep care in the community,” Fitch said.

Construction on the building is mostly performed in the evenings so as not to disrupt patients. The clinic is still operating seven days a week.

Fitch said he is excited that the renovation is not only bringing the building and facility up to date, but also helping provide jobs during the pandemic slowdown.

“One, this definitely serves the community. The second benefit is that it benefits construction (workers), which is even more important” these days, Fitch said.
