WALTHAM, MA — Newton Wellesley Hospital is closing the Urgent Care on Hope Avenue after 17 years in the space.
"To better meet the primary care needs of the Waltham community, we are closing the urgent care center and transitioning to a walk-in service that will be part of Waltham Family Medicine," a spokesperson from the hospital told Patch referring to the primary care practice that is based in the same location.
The space has been home to an urgent care since 2003. But hospital officials said the city needs primary care more than urgent care.
"The care provided in the walk-in service will be similar to what is offered in urgent care now," said Heidi Wilson, of Newton Wellesley.
The Urgent Care Center will close on Oct. 2 and we will integrate a walk-in service into the Waltham Family Medicine practice located at the same location. The practice name will change to Waltham Family Medicine and Walk-In, which will begin Oct. 5, Wilson said.
There will be no urgent care services available on Oct. 3 and 4.
The hospital is planning to build out additional primary care access within the practice in support of what it called a "significant need for primary care" in the Waltham community.
The walk-in service is open to all members of the public, not just patients of the practice. X-Ray and lab services will continue there. Walk-in service hours will change to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and then 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and until 2 p.m. Sundays.
