HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ - Hunterdon County Deputy Freeholder Director Susan Soloway explained that NARCAN (naloxone nasal spray) – the opioid overdose reversal drug – will be made available free to Hunterdon County residents.

In 2019, when the State of New Jersey implemented its program to make NARCAN available, only one Hunterdon pharmacy participated in its program despite the spread of the opioid epidemic in cities, suburbs and rural areas, such as western stretches of the state.

“As liaison to Hunterdon County’s Human Services Department, I can announce that six pharmacies in the county will be participating in the state program from Sept. 24 through 26, and we are happy to see the increased participation,” she said. “Individuals visiting the participating pharmacy can anonymously obtain NARCAN for free with no prescription and no appointment. Anonymous purchasing helps to reduce the stigma of obtaining life-saving drugs, and hopefully it encourages more people who need it to do so. While the program is designed to save lives, it is important to note that those who obtain NARCAN at the pharmacy will also be given information regarding addiction treatments and recovery.”

There are three Flemington area pharmacies that are listed as NARCAN distribution centers: ShopRite of Flemington at 272 Highway 202/Route 31; Reading Ridge Pharmacy at 8 Reading Road, suite 206; and CVS at 1930 Route 31. The full list of participating pharmacies is posted on the Department of Human Services website.

Soloway, liaison to the county Division of Senior, Disabilities and Veterans Services, also announced that the Veteran’s Administration (VA) has authorized service at the Hunterdon Healthcare Urgent Care, in Flemington, for local veterans’ needs. Soloway praised Veteran Services Officer Rich Booth for his efforts in obtaining this facility’s services for Hunterdon County’s veteran population, and “shepherding the return of this valuable service through the VA process.”

“Regaining this healthcare service for veterans in the county has been a priority of the freeholder board and Rich Booth since RWJ Urgent Care center no longer provided VA-sponsored urgent care services in early 2019,” she said. “The Hunterdon Healthcare Urgent Care center will provide local treatment for minor injuries and illnesses for those veterans who qualify for VA healthcare. This is particularly important for Hunterdon’s older or disabled veterans who have difficulty with transportation.”

She said that, to be eligible, a veteran must be enrolled with the VA Healthcare system and have previously received care through the VA or a VA provider within the last 24 months.

“VA Urgent Care centers do not require prior authorization to receive treatments,” she said. “No co-payments are collected for the first three visits if the veteran is eligible.”
