LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Southwest Power Pool, which manages the electric grid in the central U.S., has elevated its Energy Emergency Alert to level 3.

The Southwest Power Pool encompasses the Nebraska Public Power District and Lincoln Electric Systems and much of the central United States. A level 3 emergency means SPP Can ask companies like LES to do temporary power outages.

LES started its rotating power outages at 12:45 p.m. Monday in Southeast Lincoln. All of this is because the cold much of the U.S. has experienced over the last several days.

“Those sustained cold temperatures are putting a strain on the natural gas system to provide enough natural gas and that’s putting a strain on electricity generators,” Jason Fortik, VP of Power Supply with LES said.

LES said their rotating outages will last for the next 36 hours. The Norris Public Power District also announced Monday afternoon they will be doing outages as well.

“Controlled service interruptions are a last resort, and a step we take only when necessary to safeguard continued reliability of the regional grid,” said SPP’s executive vice president and chief operating officer Lanny Nickell.

In an effort to reduce the number of outages, representatives with LES and NPPD are urging its customers to conserve as much energy as possible.

“You know like right now I’ve got a hoodie on and normally I run a little space heater but I don’t have it on,” Mark Becker with NPPD said. “Every little bit will help.”

The steps they ask you to take follow:

1. Turn your thermostat down to 68 during the day and as low as you can handle at night

2. Avoid using large appliances like your oven, dishwasher and laundry machines

3. Limit hot water use

4. Unplug any electronics you’re not using

LES said it’s okay if customers aren’t able to drop temperatures down to 60 degrees due to medical needs, but are asking everyone to pitch in the best they can.

“Little actions help if a large number of customers take them,” Fortik said. “All of those little steps can add up to being a big assistance for us.”
