MARION CO., Mo. (WGEM) - Marion County has been approved for more than $15,000 in grant money from FEMA for a project that local fire officials said could save lives.
The total project costs around $21,000 once you add all the factors of acquiring the land and installing the siren.
The Marion County audible warning siren project is being headed up by the Palmyra Fire Protection District.
The Fire Chief said the new siren would be placed on the west side of highway 61 in Taylor, Missouri and there are people in the area who may not have to information they need when a disaster strikes.
“We have a motel over there and the truck stop right there, so you have people traveling through and truckers, they don’t have our local information, so they’re at the mercy of someone waking them up and telling them that we got a problem going on. So we thought this would be a strong way to alert the public in that area," said Gary Crane, Palmyra Fire Protection District chief.
Fire officials said the area is also prone to flooding, so the sirens could help alert people of flooding dangers before water gets too high.
This project has been talked about for years. Chief Crane said the planning process started back in 2019.
But there is still a lot of work that needs to be done before the siren is up and working.
“We’re still waiting on FEMA to give 100 percent paper approval. Once that’s done it will be contacting the installer, then we have to 100 percent secure the property to set it on, then work it with the installer, so I have no timeline on installation at all yet," Crane said.
Before the pole and siren can be put up, the county has to decide where to put it.
Right now the Palmyra Fire Protection District said MODOT has approved a transfer of land next to highway 61 near Taylor, but they’re still looking at other locations like using a four square foot plot of land at Mt. Olivet Church.
