Buchanan County will be running some of their deputies as EMS providers.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office is implementing a new program known as the Emergency Medical Response Team. They’ll be utilizing three cross-trained Sheriff’s deputies to provide emergency medical assistance when needed at an incident location before EMS arrives.
The program will not replace first responders or ambulance services – but since deputies are the first to arrive at the scene many times, they will be trained and equipped to provide more advanced medical needs of the victim until Fire and EMS arrive.
The Emergency Medical Response Team was developed by Deputy Dan Walter, an experienced paramedic and firefighter, with oversight from Sheriff Scott Buzynski and several others. Deputy Cory Hartmann and Deputy Mitch Franck, both experienced Emergency Medical Technicians, will also serve on the team.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Buchanan County Health Trust in February to purchase equipment for this program. The supplies and equipment were purchased in June – and in October, the Sheriff’s Office was authorized as an EMT-level service by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services.
Sheriff Buzynski says this new program will provide these added response services at no cost to the county.
