Isabella County will transition to a new way of keeping people informed about emergencies in the county early next month. It will mark the end of the county’s current CodeRED system, in place for eight years.
Smart911, the new system, is live and allows people to sign up for alerts. Either through a phone app called Smart911 or the website smart911.com, county residents can create a profile that will allow them to sign up for alerts to be sent to their phone.
The county already provides some services on the Smart911 website and phone app. Residents can make a profile of themselves and their homes to provide useful information to dispatch and First Responders called to an emergency.
Residents can tailor the kind of alerts they want to receive — public safety or weather-related — and also pick a general radius from which they will receive alerts. They can also select whether they want to receive the alerts via text message, phone message or email.
“Smart911 saves critical time in an emergency when seconds count,” said McCarther Griffis, Director of 911 and Emergency Management, in a press release. “The key information provided in a Smart911 Safety Profile enables us to know exactly where we are going and who we are looking for if a child goes missing or there is a house fire, those details can help us respond faster and more efficiently. Sending notifications through Alert allows us to keep the public informed of emergencies and how to be prepared and stay safe.”
The current phone subscription service — CodeRED — will go off the air permanently on Dec. 6. Isabella County has used the opt-in voice messaging system since 2013.
In its first use, it was able to notify 5,000 county residents about a missing man in less than 20 minutes, according to a press release from the time.
