Spirit Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Indication Light Turns On - Newsweek

A Spirit Airlines flight from Minneapolis–Saint Paul (MSP) International Airport to Orlando, Florida, returned to make an emergency landing on Sunday night.

Initial reports suggested that Spirit flight NK135's emergency landing was caused by the detection of an engine fire, but the airline has confirmed that was not the case.

A spokesperson told Newsweek that an indication light came on during the flight, with crew following protocol in returning to MSP. They did not say what the light indicated.

The Airbus A320 took off 7.15 p.m. local time (6:15 p.m. ET) on Sunday and was scheduled to land in Orlando around 11.30 p.m ET. But the flight landed back at MSP about one and a half hours after take-off.

A video posted to social media purportedly shows the aircraft landing on the runway.

The flight eventually departed with no issues at 10.55 p.m. local time and arrived in Orlando at 2.35 a.m. ET, according to FlightAware. No injuries were reported, Minneapolis-based station KARE11 reports.

MSP has been contacted for comment.

In May, another emergency landing touched down at the Minneapolis airport.

In that instance, a passenger on a flight from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to San Francisco International Airport was found snorting a white substance and refused to wear a face mask.

According to a report by NBC, Mark Anthony Scerbo, a 42-year-old man from Mechanicville, New York, was arrested on suspicion of drug possession, after been snorting the unspecified substance on JetBlue Flight 915 on May 16.

A passenger on board recorded the incident on their cell and posted it on Twitter.

In the video, a flight attendant could be heard telling passengers that Scerbo was refusing to keep his mask on and was "antagonizing" other people on board the flight.

The attendant said Scerbo was aggressive and gesturing a stabbing motion to another passenger, and was also seen "snorting a white substance."

In 2019, a Delta pilot was taken off a fully-boarded plane at MSP Airport and arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol.

Correction 11/15/2021, 7.39 a.m. ET: This article has been updated to reflect comment from Spirit Airlines that an engine fire was not the cause of the emergency landing. An earlier version reported claims that a fire had caused the incident.
