Good Question: Why did I get emergency alerts from another state? - WHEC

pentingnus.blogspot.com

That happened in Rochester.

Several people reached out after recently get alerts from a state some 2,000 miles from here.

News10NBC’s Brennan Somers found out why.

First off-- the alerts. They contained warnings of curfews, a city shutdown, and neighbors banned from being out in public. Those are all important messages and neighbors in Rochester got them. Some received the messages the same day of violence downtown back on May 30.

The problem? The alerts are for Salt Lake City, Utah. On top of that, they went out in the middle of the night here on the East Coast.

What happened? Somers took that question to emergency officials in Utah. They directed him to the feds at FEMA.

They told Somers they did everything right on their end.

Somers also found a common denominator in all of this, these are Sprint customers. He reached out to the company, which just merged with T-Mobile. It messed up.

Somers got a statement from the company. It reads:

We were made aware of this matter [and] resolved it immediately. We are sorry for any confusion it may have caused. Somers also learned the FCC has been made aware of what happened. Emergency officials say this is a great system and it can be powerful. However, it’s not perfect.
