Philadelphia, June 25, 2020 Council today unanimously passed Bill No. 200306 – legislation providing new protections for Philadelphia healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill, introduced by Councilman David Oh, ensures healthcare workers who contract a virus or disease during a pandemic or epidemic are compensated for lost wages while sick or quarantined and reimbursed for any related medical expenses.

The legislation covers full-time, part-time, and per diem healthcare workers – including workers represented by collective bargaining. Councilman Oh drafted the legislation after hearing from local nurses concerned about contracting COVID-19 without benefits in place to sustain themselves through a period of sickness or quarantine.

“I want to thank my colleagues for their support on this effort – our healthcare workers could not afford to go unprotected for the rest of the summer while COVID-19 remains a threat in our City and beyond,” said Oh.

“This bill not only provides a much-needed safety net for our invaluable healthcare workers that risk their health in service to the public, but also ensures the City will have the maximum healthcare capacity during public health emergencies.”

Passed during the last scheduled session of Council before recess, the bill would provide protection to City healthcare workers through summer 2020 and beyond if signed into law.
