BOSTON (AP) — Boston’s mayor has declared a heat emergency, opening cooling centers and pools starting Sunday.
Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh said 21 of the city community centers will be open to the public as cooling centers, and two outdoor pools and some playground spray pads will also be available.
But public libraries and city-run indoor pools will remain closed to the public due to the pandemic, he said.
City officials said residents should call before visiting a facility to make sure it isn’t at capacity, which will be limited to prevent spread of the virus.
Visitors will also be screened prior to entry, be required to wear face masks, maintain social distancing, bring their own water bottles and limit belongings to one small bag, among other rules.
“COVID-19 is still a threat,” Walsh said in a statement Friday. “Everyone needs to keep doing their part.”
Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s Sunday through Tuesday, with the humidity making it feel more like 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
