In the wake of “civil unrest” during recent protests, the city of Norco has declared a local emergency and will implement a citywide curfew until further notice, officials said late Tuesday.
The curfew is set from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting on Tuesday until the city’s Director of Emergency Services cancels it, officials said. The curfew prohibits people from being in public places with some exceptions.
“Due to civil unrest arising out of the protests related to the Black Lives Matter Movement, the City of Norco has declared a local emergency existing throughout the entire city. As such, a daily curfew has been implemented within the city limits, effective June 30, 2020, between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. until cancelled by the Director of Emergency Services,” read a notice posted on the city’s website.
During the curfew, according to the city, no one will be allowed in any public place with the exception of police, fire, or emergency operations personnel; members of the National Guard or other responding military personnel; people traveling to and from work; members of the media; homeless people and certain other essential workers.
The city’s action comes a day after about 50 people rallied in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in the equestrian community of Norco on Monday afternoon, June 29.
Participants gathered at Neal Snipes Park and marched to Norco City Hall. On the way they were met by counter-protesters and supporters of President Donald Trump who outnumbered them two to one, said Elizabeth Kavianian, a Norco resident.
Kavianian said police escorted the Black Lives Matter group the last few blocks to the city office. There they stopped, knelt and read names of people who have lost their lives in police shootings around the country, including George Floyd, she said.
