Emergency officials say “be safe while celebrating”.

A release from the Oregon Office of Emergency Management said that celebrating Independence Day may look a little different thing year. It said while annual festivals and summer activities have been canceled or restricted due to COVID-19, there are still ways to enjoy summertime celebrations while managing risks and keeping Oregonians safe.

The release said residents should celebrate with family and in small groups. If fireworks are a tradition being maintained, a bucket of water should be kept nearby, while maintaining a safe distance from people, pets and buildings. Always purchase legal fireworks and use them only in areas where they are allowed. Fireworks are prohibited on the Oregon State beaches, parks, campgrounds and state and federal forest lands. Residents should check local restrictions, according to the release.

Multiple areas in Oregon are abnormally dry with much of the state experiencing severe drought. That makes for elevated wildfire conditions and increased risk. The release said those who plan to travel to scenic areas for the holiday weekend, should stay close to home.
