DEAR READERS: Many of us have experienced an emergency or crime, unfortunately. However, safety experts say there are things we should know when we report one to 911 in order to get quicker results. Here are key steps to take.
When you call, try to remain calm. Clearly state, "I want to report ... a robbery ... a fire ... a medical emergency." Then you will be asked these questions: Where? When? Describe the person or situation. Is the person breathing? Are there weapons present? Are there injuries? Where did the criminal go? Try to answer the questions with as much detail as you can. Then listen carefully to the operator and follow the instructions given to you.
Ask for the name of the operator who took your information so you can call back if you have more details to report. This will save time. Definitely call back if the situation has changed or you have updated info.
If a vehicle is involved in this emergency, try get the make, model, color and license plate number. Experts say the first three numbers are most important.
DEAR READERS: Our homes are filled with so many remote controls today, and it's tough to keep track of them. They get lost in the couch or left anywhere else in the house. Remind family members to leave the controllers near the TV, or put out several colorful baskets designated to hold them. And, to make the remote controls easier to find, paint stripes or dots of bright red nail polish on them or wrap colorful tape around them.
DEAR HELOISE: I just purchased a new mattress, and I want it to last a long time. How can I do this?

DEAR BRITTANY: A mattress is an important investment, and with care, it should last about 10 years. Be sure to rotate and flip the mattress (not those with a pillow top) a couple of times a year. And wash the mattress cover often, following the care instructions. Let the cover dry completely before you put it back on.
To freshen the mattress, you can sprinkle it with baking soda, which will neutralize odors. Then vacuum it up. You can use a fabric spray too, but never over-wet it. Let the spray dry completely.
And get out your vacuum to lift off dust, dirt and debris. Don't forget to dust the frame and vacuum under the bed too.
DEAR READERS: Our phones get so much use these days and they do get so dirty and sticky. To remove smudges, dirt or makeup, spritz just a bit of an all-purpose cleaner on a paper towel and lightly wipe over the dirtiest areas. Never spray cleaners directly on your smartphone. For a quick clean, use prepackaged wet towelettes to do the job. You can store them in your purse or pocket.
