Pensacola’s mayor has declared a state of emergency in the city due to rising COVID-19 case counts.
The declaration was issued late Tuesday afternoon by mayor Grover C. Robinson IV. “Today, our hospitalizations surpassed the 75 threshold, with 78 hospitalizations between our three local hospital systems (up from 61 hospitalizations yesterday),” Robinson wrote.
The Pensacola New Journal reported that “the practical effect of the state of emergency is limited, but Robinson previously said he would use the declaration to alert the public that coronavirus numbers are increasing at a level that is hard to keep under control.”
According to the declaration, a city ordinance already in effect requires face coverings to be worn by employees and patrons inside city businesses.
“(D)ata from the Florida Department of Health indicates that the number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Escambia County has spiked with 90 positive cases reported on Nov. 8, an average of 84 new cases each day for the seven-day period leading up to and including Nov. 8, and a seven-day positivity rate of 7.3% for the week ending Nov. 6, versus 5.1% and 4.4% for the two previous weeks,” says the order. “This data indicates greater local community spread and transmission of the disease.”
On Nov. 3, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis extended a statewide state of emergency for 60 days because of the “continuing threat to the health, safety and welfare of the State of Florida and its residents” posed by COVID-19. However, a Sept. 25 order from DeSantis also blocks local governments from issuing emergency ordinances that prevent individuals from working or from operating businesses; says restaurants cannot be limited to less than 50% of their indoor capacity; and suspends the collection of COVID-related fines and penalties on individuals.
