Phillipsburg is now under a state of local emergency declared Thursday due to rising COVID-19 cases.

Mayor Todd Tersigni and fire Chief Rich Hay, the town’s emergency management coordinator, made the declaration. It is similar to a state of emergency declared March 16 at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic and which was subsequently lifted.

Warren County as of Wednesday has seen 1,865 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 214 in Phillipsburg. There have been 158 deaths linked to the virus.

Warren County Health Department figures show new cases on the rise since mid-to-late October, reaching an average of 28.4 cases per day reported in the last week.

Statewide, New Jersey on Thursday reported 3,517 more coronavirus cases — the fourth time in six days of more than 3,000 positive tests — and 18 additional deaths, nj.com reports.

Declaring a state of local emergency aims to assist Phillipsburg in addressing the recent spike in cases, Tersigni said.

“We wish to ensure all proper health and safety protocols are being followed by our employees and residents to ensure the continuity of municipal government operations and proper delivery of municipal services, including Administrative, Police, Fire and Public Works,” the mayor said in a news release, continuing:

“This declaration also permits the Town of Phillipsburg to take extraordinary steps regarding personnel policies, emergency purchasing and safety procedures to ensure that all protocols are strictly enforced for everyone’s safety and well-being, as we work through this pandemic.”
