Scioto County declares Level 2 snow emergency - WSAZ

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – Another county in southeastern Ohio has declared a Level 2 snow emergency.

Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman made that announcement Wednesday evening.

A Level 2 means roads are ice and snow covered and travel should be for essential needs only. Essential travel means traveling to and from your place of employment, emergencies, and caring for others.

Drivers are advised to use extreme caution.

WSAZ’s Andrew Colegrove reports that southeastern Ohio has been getting a steady dose of sleet and snow all evening. Roads and sidewalks across Portsmouth are mostly covered and slick. Icicles have been forming on traffic lights.

Colegrove got one shot where sleet could be seen bouncing off the road as it hits. On the comment section on the Scioto Emergency Management Facebook page, several people were talking about family members who have slid into ditches Wednesday night.

Salt trucks and snow plows are out working tonight, but this wintry mix continues to fall and make traveling potentially dangerous.

Due to the inclement weather, the Scioto County Courthouse and Scioto County Job and Family Services will open at 10 am Thursday. Employees are advised to check with their supervisor if they have any questions.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers say they have received several reports of cars going into ditches in Scioto County but no such calls from Lawrence or Pike counties.
