"Due to a combination of high gen outages typical in April & higher-than-forecasted demand caused by a stalled cold front over TX, ERCOT may enter emergency conditions," the grid operator tweeted at 4:39 p.m.
While it made the alert and conservation request, ERCOT stated it does not expect customer outages.
"Declaring an emergency would allow us to access additional resources," ERCOT explained.
As for the conservation, it urged consumers and businesses to reduce their electricity use this afternoon and into this evening.
During an evening media call with ERCOT officials, they were asked if Texans should expect this to happen again. ERCOT said it's certainly possible. The group said as of late Tuesday afternoon, 25% of generation capacity is down for scheduled maintenance.
The agency reminded reporters that this isn't the same situation as was February's winter storm and said it's just a precautionary event that will "tighten conditions for a few hours."
