Scott, LA - Lafayette 911 was started by Bill Vincent in 1983 in the windowless basement of the parish courthouse for over three decades. Now they’re in a new multi-million dollar facility.
The new $9.6 million emergency communications center that opened in January and was built with 911 operators in mind.
For 38 years, operators worked out of the basement. As time went on however, Craig Stansbury says they knew a bigger facility would eventually be needed.
"As the years developed, Mr. Vincent and the 911 board realized that we’re going to need a new building through the growth and technology of Lafayette Parish and for the need of the citizens of Lafayette for that 911 facility," he said.
The Lafayette Parish Communication District became proactive in in the early 2000s, creating a plan for the new home of Lafayette 911.
"They started a future project’s fund and throughout the years they saved the money and were able to facilitate a new building. We started the actual planning of this building in 2015 and were able to move into the building in January 2021," said Stansbury.
The facility provides plenty of space for 911 operators and the latest technology to ensure the most efficient response times. Something Stansbury says wasn’t entirely possible at the old location.
"So we’re able to bring in some of the latest technology in here to get the first responders to where they need to be more efficiently and quicker. And that’s one of the most important things also, to be able to locate callers when they call," Stansbury said.
It was also built with natural disasters in mind; equipped with backup generators and can withstand a category five hurricane. "The actual building itself is made to withstand a lot of weather or a lot of force. The main function here is we never want 911 to go down."
Stansbury also says this new building was built for a 25 year growth of the parish. Which will allow them to add new accommodations as needed over time. It is also equipped with a backup facility for other local agencies should their own facilities ever go down.
