Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse Community Health Center has opened an urgent care center in downtown Syracuse to serve patients 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The clinic at the health center’s main location at 819 S. Salina St. is the first and only urgent care center downtown. It is open to everyone, not just health center patients. The urgent care will add weekend hours in the near future.
Urgent care patients will have access to the health center’s medical and dental providers.
It also will provide the Moderna Covid-19 booster shots without appointment.
“Patients don’t often have a primary care provider or want greater convenience and urgent care is helping people get the care they need, when they want it,” said Mark Hall, president and CEO of the health center.
The urgent care will provide treatment for rashes, infections, sprains, dental issues and other common health problems that do not require hospital emergency room care.
The health center, founded in 1978, is one of about 1,300 nonprofit community health centers nationwide created by federal legislation that provides some funding for the facilities. The centers are required by law to cater to medically underserved populations. The health center is open to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.
The center serves about 30,000 patients annually.
The health center has served as Onondaga County’s main Covid-19 testing site since the pandemic began in March, 2020. It has tested more than 50,000 people.
The center recently teamed up with AMR ambulance to help ease overcrowding in Syracuse hospital emergency rooms.
Under a pilot program, AMR crews evaluate Medicare patients who call 911 to determine if they can be treated at the health center instead of an ER if their conditions are not serious enough to warrant emergency care.
