REDDING Calif.- There has been a heightened focus on health amid the pandemic, but some people have difficulty accessing medical help.
Some people are rushing to urgent care because primary care doctors have longer wait times to see new patients.
Todd Adair’s 80-year-old mother has been living in Redding for about a year, and he just moved up a few months ago from Sacramento to help her. He tells Action News Now they’ve been looking for a Primary Care Physician for months but have had no luck.
“The idea is you submit the paperwork, and then you wait for a couple of months to wait till you hear and see if you are assigned a primary care physician, and again the market is tough to find a primary caregiver in this area," Adair said.
Meanwhile, Adair says he’s been taking his mom to urgent care for the past two months because she can’t wait until a doctor can take on her case.
“She does need routine health care, and so it’s a frustrating situation to be in, particularly for the elderly, we are generally healthy, and this is the second time I’ve had her to this particular clinic in those two months; it’s just over impacted; there aren’t enough primary health care providers," Adair said.
Action News Now reporter Jordan Henry called some doctor's offices to see if they take new patients, and they say it will take a few weeks before you can get an appointment. If you can’t wait, you should go to urgent care.
Adair tells Action News Now he hopes he can get a primary care doctor for his mom as soon as possible so she won’t have to keep going to urgent care.
