Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday night renewed the state’s public health emergency for another 30 days, thereby extending the expiration for his executive orders issued in response to the coronavirus.

But the state is still moving forward with its reopening -- with non-essential retail, outdoor dining to open June 15 and hair salons and sports practices to resume June 22.

“As we move forward with our restart and recovery plan, maintaining access to all resources available is essential,” Murphy said in a statement. “Extending the Public Health Emergency allows us to continue to work to save lives, while safely and securely reopening our state’s economy.”

Murphy initially declared the public health emergency and a state of emergency on March 9. The state of emergency does not expire but the public health emergency must be renewed every 30 days.

A public health emergency allows the governor to take broad action to protect New Jersey under the Emergency Health Powers Act.

State officials on Thursday announced 603 new cases of coronavirus and 92 new deaths attributed to the virus. That brings New Jersey’s totals to 11,970 lives lost and 162,530 cases since the outbreak started March 4.

Hospitalizations also fell below 2,000 for the first time since the state began tracking them on April 4. There were 1,982 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Wednesday night at 10 p.m. and 1,933 as of Thursday night at 10 p.m., according to state data.

Here’s a roundup of coronavirus news:

Murphy plan for billions in borrowing to avert ‘historic’ public worker layoffs clears Assembly. A plan offered by Gov. Phil Murphy for New Jersey’s state government to make up for massive losses in tax revenue with up to $14 billion in borrowing passed the state Assembly on Thursday but still lacks support from state Senate President Stephen Sweeney.

N.J. indoor malls remain closed, not part of nonessential retail reopening, Murphy says. As most nonessential retail businesses in New Jersey are allowed to reopen to customers inside stores June 15, the state’s indoor malls will remain closed for the time being as the state continues to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday.

N.J. limits nonessential stores reopening to half capacity, with masks required. Here are the details. When most — but not all — nonessential retail businesses in New Jersey are allowed to reopen with shoppers inside stores June 15, capacity will be limited to 50% and both customers and employees will be required to wear face coverings to protect against the coronavirus.

N.J. education department sends survey to parents asking about reopening schools. The state Department of Education has sent a survey to parents about reopening schools and remote learning ahead of announcements guiding how schools will operate in the fall as the coronavirus crisis continues.

N.J. high school starts in-person graduation ceremony that will span 6 days. Since the High School Principal’s Handbook doesn’t include an entry on how to conduct a commencement exercise during the global coronavirus pandemic lockdown, it was up to Dennis Vinson, principal at Hightstown High, to write his own chapter.

Rutgers U. students, employees trying to avert hundreds of layoffs. A coalition of 19 unions at Rutgers University stepped up the pressure Thursday in urging the administration to halt hundreds of layoffs stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

Family turns its painful loss from coronavirus into help for N.J. hospital. “We had no expertise in procurement or connections with the medical device industry but acted in the spirit of our grand-uncle and relentlessly sought for a solution. We hope our action inspires others in a time where many feel helpless and unable to contribute," Drew Solanki said.
