New Jersey will remain in public health emergency status for another 30 days under an order issued by Gov. Phil Murphy late Thursday.
Extending his prior emergency declaration was necessary even as the state has ramped up its reopening, Murphy said. It does not impact reopening dates Murphy announced in recent days, including those for limited retail at non-essential businesses, outdoor seating at restaurants and the promise of salons and gyms to open soon.
“As we move forward with our restart and recovery plan, maintaining access to all resources available is essential,” Murphy said in a statement. “Extending the Public Health Emergency allows us to continue to work to save lives, while safely and securely reopening our state’s economy.”

Declaring the public health emergency, which is permitted under a 2005 law, gives Murphy and state department leaders expanded authority to respond to a crisis. As long as the emergency is in effect, actions taken via executive order by Murphy and state leaders are still valid, according to the governor's office. The state has also cited the law to deny the public information about its response.
The public health emergency was first declared on March 9 just days after officials announced the state's first case of coronavirus. By law, the emergency declaration expires in 30 days, and so Murphy has renewed it now three times.
The governor has also declared a state of emergency under a separate law that is more typically used to mobilize a response to weather events or natural disasters. An emergency declaration under that law does not need to be renewed.
