El Dorado County supervisors plan to hold an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss the enforcement of rules to slow the spread of the coronavirus after the rate of positive tests spiked in South Lake Tahoe.
The Board of Supervisors meeting, which is scheduled for 2 p.m., will include providing “direction to staff regarding enforcement against businesses and individuals who fail to comply with state and local health requirements,” according to the meeting agenda posted online.
County officials on Wednesday issued a statement that reported an increase in cases in the South Lake Tahoe region, where the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 people over the last two weeks has soared past the state’s threshold for monitoring counties.
Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams said in the statement that by Sunday the area had “so many new cases in the South Lake Tahoe region that the rate had risen to 169 per 100,000, far exceeding one of the Governor’s criteria for requiring the roll back of some of the allowances we’ve worked hard to attain.”
Williams is “taking a closer look” at the region’s rate of infection following an influx of visitors to the region over the Fourth of July weekend, according to the statement.
Since health officials started tracking the coronavirus in March, Williams said, cases in South Lake Tahoe have been “disproportionately high” considering the area has accounted for about half of the county’s cases to date while representing just 17% of its population.
While the rate of positive tests in the South Lake Tahoe region has increased, numbers countywide remain below reopening thresholds set by the state.
However, Williams said if the South Lake Tahoe region was treated as its own county, “it would now be added to the State’s monitoring list and asked to curtail certain activities.”
She cautioned that numbers across the county are trending upward and urged people to take precautions and follow face covering and social-distancing requirements.
“There are plenty of ways to safely enjoy all the natural beauty El Dorado County offers whether it be hiking, boating, camping, climbing or going to the beach,” Williams said.
