State Office of Emergency Management, Department of Environmental Conservation, State Police and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control Currently On the Scene

Earlier this morning, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo directed personnel from the State Office of Emergency Management, Department of Environmental Conservation, State Police and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control to respond to a chemical release from a stationary train car at the SABIC Innovative Chemicals facility in Selkirk. A safety release valve on the stationary train car released styrene monomer, a hazardous chemical additive used in plastic manufacturing.

"The release of this hazardous chemical has been halted and state personnel are on the scene now working to contain any potential spread. While this is an evolving situation, it is currently under control and we will continue coordinating with local officials and mobilize any resources necessary to protect the health and safety of New Yorkers in the affected area."

Route 32 has been closed to traffic. Additional closures include Route 32 at Old Quarry Road, Route 32 at County Route 308, Creble Road at Elm Avenue, and Creble Road at Old School Road.  

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
