The Oregon Office of Emergency Management’s handling on the current fire emergency is beyond incompetent, breaking Rule No. 1 of emergency management: Establish well-informed, calm, authoritative, credible decision-making leadership to maintain order, effective management and deployment of resources, and public confidence that enables maximum protection of safety and basis for recovery. Hysterically multiplying the crisis by more than 10 times is the absolute antithesis of emergency and crisis management (“Oregon initially said 500,000 people had been evacuated because of wildfires. The numbers didn’t add up -- and the state backtracked,” Sept 11). This widely publicized overreaction is literally the only (up to now unimaginable) thing that, abhorrently, could make the president’s “didn’t want people to panic” defense of his deceit, revealed this week, seem rational whatsoever. And it disrespects every emergency responder doing the work on the ground.

Is there one good reason the Oregon Emergency Management directors who did this and the governor’s staffers who let or led her down this blind alley are still employed? Hint: That the emergency is still ongoing clearly doesn’t qualify.
