LAUREL HILL — Laurel Hill Elementary first graders had quite the experience Friday as different branches of local emergency services personnel showed up to teach them a little about what they do.
“In first grade this week, students learned about community helpers and their importance in our community,” said Event Coordinator Jasmine Keene. “We were able to make this event possible with the help from Deputy Ford and Mrs. Terry Patterson. I talked with him about having actual community helpers come out for our students to meet.
“They have enjoyed talking with them, seeing their vehicles and even getting to watch the helicopter land and take off,” continued Keene. “We would like to thank Scotland County EMS, First Heath of the Carolinas Safe Kids Van, Scotland County Rescue, Laurel Hill Fire Department, Cape Fear Life Link Air and the Scotland County Sheriffs Department for taking time from their busy schedules to brighten our student’s faces.”
Principal Laura Bailey said the staff at LHES always makes it a priority to not only ensure their students get a quality educational experience while also preparing them to become successful and productive members of the community.
“That’s why the focus on community helpers is so special,” said Bailey. “It gives us the chance to highlight and celebrate our public service professionals who are not only community helpers, but community heroes.
“I’m so appreciative of all of the people who took time out of their busy schedules to spend with our students today,” added Bailey. “Community engagement is vital to student success and we are thankful for the support we always have in the Scotland County community. We are very appreciative of Lieutenant Ford for working with our first-grade teachers to coordinate the event.”
