Mary-Kate Olsen’s Divorce Isn’t an Actual Emergency, Says Judge - Vanity Fair

When Mary-Kate Olsen filed an emergency order requesting a divorce in a Manhattan court on Wednesday, it was the first public indication that things had gone wrong between the famous twin turned fashion magnate and her banker husband, Olivier Sarkozy. In Olsen’s telling, the matter was of great urgency, as Sarkozy ended the lease on the Gramercy apartment she is currently living in and wants her out by Monday. On Thursday a judge denied her request, ruling that the divorce was not essential, according to Page Six.

Manhattan courts have been closed to new nonessential cases since late March due to the coronavirus crisis, and many divorce petitions have been denied since then. According to Page Six, Olsen first submitted the divorce paperwork on April 17, but her case was deemed unable to move forward.

In the emergency order filed Wednesday, she claimed that her marriage had broken down over a matter of months, and there was no hope of reconciliation. “The relationship between [the two] has broken down irretrievably for a period of at least six months,” she wrote in the filing. “I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well.”

The order requested help to prevent her from having to search for a new apartment during the pandemic, and also sought to block Sarkozy from discarding any of her property. In addition, it asked for the prenuptial agreement the couple signed in 2015 to be enforced—it’s “ironclad,” according to Us Weekly—and for Olsen to retain access to the couple’s multiple properties.

Coincidentally, Olsen’s twin and business partner, Ashley Olsen, was spotted in Manhattan wearing a navy overcoat and leather-looking mask, apparently on her way to the pair’s office. According to E!, Mary-Kate has been spending time with Ashley outside of the city because of the acrimonious divorce with Sarkozy. “It’s gotten very ugly between them,” a source told the network. “She’s done with constant drama.”
