Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has declared a state of emergency and an immediate curfew.
The curfew bans people from being out in public between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. until the order is lifted, according to mayor’s declaration. The mayor signed the declaration at 12:35 a.m. Sunday.
The nighttime curfew will remain in effect until the mayor lifts the state of emergency.
“... The civil unrest and disturbance within the city of Syracuse is causing or is imminently likely to cause a threat to the maintenance of law and order or endanger property, life or the safety and welfare of the citizens of the city of Syracuse...” the declaration said.
The declaration exempts people from the curfew who provide essential services such as fire, police, law enforcement, ambulance and/or hospital services.
