For years, as Floridians we’ve heard the mantra during the summer, which is also hurricane season: Have three days of emergency supplies like food, water, toiletries and medicine per person in your household.

Change that to seven days for a hurricane season occurring during a once-in-a-century pandemic.

“This year, it’s more important than ever to have seven days of supplies ready for hurricane season,” said FDEM Director Jared Moskowitz. “The forecasts are calling for an active hurricane season and now is the time to prepare. I’m urging every Floridian to get these critical supplies like food, water and medicine, and remember to also have COVID-19 supplies like hand sanitizer, a mask and disinfectant wipes in your disaster kit.”

Bill Litton, Osceola County’s emergency management director, said it’s about the mobilization of supplies and how the coronavirus pandemic could affect the supply chain this year.

“The best thing to do is stock up gradually during the next few weeks, when there isn’t a storm threatening, to avoid the mad dash of everyone trying to grab everything when a storm threatens,” he said.
