Residents interested in finding out more about the city’s public access gates will have a chance at a council rules committee meeting today.
The meeting is slated for 4:30 p.m., Monday, June 15, at Jackson City Hall.
Ward Six Councilman Aaron Banks, who chairs the committee, called the meeting last week.
A public notice was issued Friday afternoon.
Banks initially told the Sun the meeting would be a public hearing.
However, he said a second hearing would be scheduled after being asked by the Sun if residents had been given enough advance notice.
Gates are a major topic of discussion among Northsiders, with opponents and supporters having strong opinions on the subject. In April 2019, the council chambers were packed when two neighborhoods presented their proposals to install the devices.
The notice was issued at 12:25 p.m., on Friday, June 12.
Notices of public meetings must be issued at least 24 hours before a meeting.
Questions also arose over the accuracy of the public notice.
The announcement, which was emailed to local media Friday, did not indicate the meeting would be a public hearing.
Banks said those in attendance at today’s gathering would be allowed to offer comment.
He also he would work with Council President Virgi Lindsay to set another hearing date in the coming days.
Banks has led the charge to amend the city's public access gate ordinance. He told the Sun recently that he hoped to have the new amendments in place by the end of the month.
