Avantor’s plant at 600 N. Broad St. in Phillipsburg will be having an emergency response training exercise until noon Wednesday, the specialty chemical corporation said.

The annual training began at 9 a.m. with a reverse 9-1-1 call from the Warren County Department of Emergency Management advising residents of the drill, an advisory said.

Town and Lopatcong Township firefighters, emergency medical personnel and police were involved, as were the Warren County Hazardous Materials Team, the emergency management personnel, and St. Luke’s hospitals in Phillipsburg and Wilson Borough, the advisory said.

The exercise tests the company’s response and its coordination with emergency responders.

“There will be heightened activity in and around the facility” and emergency traffic will enter the plant from Broad Street and Route 621, the advisory said.

There could be sirens, lights and “manufactured smoke”, the company said.

“The community should not be alarmed as these efforts are all part of a drill,” the advisory said.

For many years, the plant was known as Baker Chemical, but the firm has changed hands a couple of times since then.
