I went downtown Sunday, to see what was going on; talked a homeless lady. Her legs were so swollen from edema you couldn’t distinguish her knees; walking and even sitting down was painful for her.
As I left, to return home, I noticed the new big black steel bars on the entry way of the Chamber of Commerce. And I remembered a chamber employee telling the story of having to walk around a dead homeless guy to get to work one morning; And the rape of the homeless woman, outside, who was 10 minutes late getting to the shelter one night. As I rounded the corner to Wall Street, I noticed the new big black steel bars in the Fishbio entry way. I thought of the other big black steel bars put up recently in front of other downtown entryways.
From the time Chico was founded, until recently, big black steel bars have not been so common. The look of Chico is changing, from the welcoming rural town I came to know, for most of my life, to that of a city under the siege of an unaddressed shelter crisis.
“Mark Orme is recommending using $6 million to completely fund the City’s emergency reserve … ” I submit that our city is in the emergency of our lifetime right now.
Sacramento’s mayor said their city will fund 500 new tiny homes. Seattle’s council has voted for 40 more tiny home villages. Marysville’s village has won a state award.
Working together we can end homelessness.
