BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Broward County School Board is holding an emergency special meeting Thursday morning to discuss the district’s reopening plan.
The meeting began at 10:30 a.m.
School Board members are discussing whether to reopen schoolhouses on Monday as has been decided for public schools in Miami-Dade County. As of last week, Broward public schools were expected to reopen in mid-October.
The Broward Teachers Union held a news conference before the meeting, calling for School Board members not to cave to political pressure.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” BTU President Anna Fusco said. “I personally feel that we need to stand up, and I don’t want to say to call his bluff, but to say, ‘No! It’s six school days to give extra protection to make sure that our schools open safely and with help.’”
Both counties are under pressure from Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran to reopen sooner than Oct. 14. Broward School Board Chair Donna Korn said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie shared Corcoran’s request with school board members.
The Broward School Board originally approved a plan to return to physical classrooms on Oct. 14. The date was based on a plan approved by the state’s Department of Education.
But now Corcoran is asking the Broward County School District to reopen sooner or possibly face losing millions of dollars in funding.
Fusco said many teachers and administrators don’t feel ready to come back to schools so soon. She also said she believes the school board will do what is right for Broward County.
“It just doesn’t make sense to rush it,” Fusco said.
Runcie recommended Thursday that students begin returning to the classroom next Tuesday.
“The state has the ability to hold the purse strings of the district and I can tell you that on principle, yes, it makes for us to go and fight this, but sometimes you have to lose to win,” he said.
Below is a breakdown of when students would return:
Oct. 6: Pre-K through Second Grade.
Oct. 8: Grades 3-6, 9
Oct. 12: Grades 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12.
The Florida Department of Health has already started to track COVID-19 cases associated with schools that have already reopened.
