ST. PETERSBURG — A medical emergency led to a fatal crash on Interstate 275 on Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 51-year-old man was driving south in the outside I-275 lane near the 28th Street S exit, troopers said. Then the driver suffered a medical emergency and lost control of his SUV.

The left driver’s side of his SUV struck the right side of another SUV driving south in the inside lane. Then the 51-year-old man’s SUV struck the guardrail and stopped on the shoulder.

The Highway Patrol said the St. Petersburg man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Troopers did not say if he died from injuries sustained in the crash or from the medical issue he was experiencing. He was wearing his seatbelt.

The other SUV also stopped on the shoulder, troopers said. The 76-year-old driver nor 63-year-old passenger were not injured. Both were wearing their seatbelts. The Highway Patrol did not release the names of anyone involved in the crash.
