In response to the May 23 editorial “Multnomah County needs to add more shelters to homeless crisis response”: That so many of our neighbors are without safe shelter is a violation of what is acceptable in a just and healthy society. It is clear the focus on permanent housing does not address the immediate crisis of our most needy neighbors, many of them elderly and disabled. It is an emergency when they are forced to live in tents, under tarps, in doorways and without access to facilities to meet their most basic safety and hygiene needs. To not respond with urgency to their suffering by committing resources to providing them the dignity of safe shelter is inhumane, a moral failing. So, to our elected leaders, what is the plan to bridge the gap between today’s emergency of no safe place to sleep and the availability of permanent housing at some uncertain future date?
