If you see any first responders on the Ohio River today, don't be alarmed. They're just practicing drills.

The Coast Guard, along with multiple city, county, and state agencies gathered at the Angel Mounds Boat Dock Wednesday morning for emergency drills.

"As conservation officers, we consider ourselves the guardians of Indiana's water ways, but there's also situations where need to rely on local agencies," Joe Haywood, Indiana conservation officer. Haywood tells us this not only gives them a chance to meet with local agencies, but gives him a chance to see what they can offer incase of an emergency.

The purpose of these drills are to improve maritime incident responses on the water. "We prepare for an active shooter situations at schools and hospitals, but most people don't think about it happening on the water"

Drills include learning how to approach a tug boat, performing man overboard drills, touch-and go exercises, and active shooter scenarios. Officers used dummy dolls and a K9 for some of the drills as well.

Officials say the last time they practiced was in 2018: "You don't want the real deal situation to be the first time you practice," says Haywood

The training will run all day Wednesday and Thursday water-side, and on-shore.
