Dr. Robert Flood has been appointed chief of emergency medicine at Nicklaus Children’s Health System, responsible for overseeing the Emergency Department on the Nicklaus Children’s main campus as well as Nicklaus Children’s physician teams providing emergency services at collaborating hospitals in South Florida.
Dr. Flood comes to Nicklaus Children’s from the Department of Pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where he served as professor of pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine, and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he led as division director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
In addition to leading emergency services on the Nicklaus Children’s main campus near Coral Gables, he will also be responsible for Nicklaus Children’s emergency medicine physicians providing care at the emergency departments at Baptist Hospital, Homestead Hospital and the Mastroianni Family Pediatric Emergency Department at Jupiter Medical Center.

Dr. Flood earned his medical degree from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and went on to complete a combined residency in pediatrics and internal medicine at University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he also served as chief resident of pediatrics. After that, he pursued a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School / Boston Children’s Hospital. He is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine.
The Emergency Department at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital provides care for more than 90,000 patient visits annually and has a team of board-certified and fellowship-trained attending pediatric specialists and subspecialists on call 24 hours a day. The Emergency Department is also home to the Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center, the only freestanding Level I pediatric trauma center in South Florida.
