When tragedy struck any part of the nation, blood banks had little to fall back on but the goodwill of other facilities donating any units of blood they could spare.
Now, Greenville’s The Blood Connection is joining the first-in-the-nation network of providers for mass-casualty events that would ordinarily deplete a local blood bank’s supplies.
The network, called the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps, is a group of blood banks that will keep blood supplies on hand to respond “on-call” to any critical need emergency. If needed, those units of blood can be transported anywhere in the country. This way, a blood bank will know exactly what they have on hand to respond to any emergency. The rotation for The Blood Connection starts today and repeats every three weeks.
Recently, the network was activated following the school shooting in Oxford Township, Michigan, according to Delisa English, CEO of The Blood Connection.
“[This] is a first-in-the-nation partnership that will better prepare the areas we serve for emergency situations,” she said.
A MedTrans helicopter landed at the news conference and is always equipped with several units of blood to help with life-saving treatment as they fly patients to the hospital.
Dr. Surabhi Gaur, chief medical officer of Bon Secours St. Francis – Greenville, said donors can now affect the lives of people regionally or possibly nationally.
Dr. Wendell James, chief medical officer for Prisma Health Upstate, said they can’t plan for trauma, but they can support massive transfusions and mass-casualty events.
“Sometimes the worst is more than the resources can support,” he said.
