NOTE, 10/6: This story has been updated to reflect the transitional timeline between the two campuses.
MUSKEGON, MI — The emergency room at Muskegon’s Mercy Health Hackley campus will close and relocate as part of a consolidation of services, following the establishment of a 10-story, multimillion-dollar medical campus.
Beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, patients in need of emergency care will need to go to the Mercy Campus, 1500 E. Sherman Blvd., rather than to the emergency department at the Hackley campus, located at 1700 Clinton St.
Patients already at Hackley will continue to be treated, but no new patient care will occur after 6 a.m. on Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the health system.
On Sunday, Oct. 18, the former Hackley E.R. will re-open as an urgent care clinic, open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Sunday through Saturday.
The move is part of a consolidation of services at Mercy Health, which began opening up portions of the $291 million, 380,000-square-foot tower at the Mercy Health Muskegon Mercy Campus, in 2018.
The emergency room will be on the first floor of that tower, with its own entrance, according to a spokesperson for the health group.
Although the Mercy campus has already operated an emergency room since opening, this move will expand the type of emergency care offered, bringing trauma services from the Hackley Campus on Clinton Street to the Mercy Campus on Sherman Blvd., according to a press release.

The tower is located directly south of the Mercy Campus hospital. Construction began in September 2016, and a phased-in opening began in December 2018. Following a second phase of construction, five more floors opened in May 2019.
That building is now in its third and final phase, according to a press release from the health system.
Construction is due to be completed on Oct. 19, marked by the opening of a birthing center and a surgical unit on the 10th floor. Inpatient care is also moving from the Hackley campus to the Mercy campus next week, according to the same press release.
A Catholic health system with operations across West Michigan, Mercy Health is the largest employer in Muskegon.
