DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -Many are not taking advantage of the weekly free testing through the Alabama department of public health, instead they are going to urgent care facilities in hope of a quick diagnosis.
The need for covid-19 tests in the wiregrass is greater than before.
Doctor Beth Weaver with All South said, “I don’t think it’s over, I think it will probably surge for another couple of weeks or so.”
The post holiday surge is real and those bearing the brunt of it is local urgent care facilities, people around the wiregrass are waiting in their cars so they can get tested to see if they have covid-19.
“We have of late been running a percentage of 48 to 50 % positives of the test we’ve been running,” Weaver said.
Community spread is growing, in part due to, “People are still getting in closed spaces, small groups but it only takes one person in that small group to pass it on and then it goes out from there everywhere,” Weaver said.
Medically speaking the community is stretched.
Weaver said, “So if you have an automobile accident, a problem pregnancy, a heart attack, stroke, you need to be hospitalized there may not be room here.”
An extended wait is expected at many of these urgent care facilities, but they’re trying to process people as quickly as possible.
“We hate the most that people have to wait, it’s just what it is” Weaver said. “We’re going as fast as we can there’s a certain number of machines that can run the test, there are only so many phone lines that can ring, so we ask for people’s patience.”
Patience not only with regards to testing but also with the vaccines.
She said, “Hope is coming, vaccines are on the way or they’re here.”
Weaver encouraging all to get vaccinated when their time comes.
