Pointing to the dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases, two hospital systems on Friday announced the closure of emergency rooms at facilities in Rockwall and Commerce in order to redirect staff to other campuses.

The Texas Health hospital system said its north Rockwall ER on Lakeshore Drive would close at midnight Friday. Staff members are being sent to the system’s main campus on Horizon Road to help care for COVID-19 patients there.

Texas Health said it would continue caring for people already at the Lakeshore Drive ER and people who arrive by midnight.

Earlier Friday, the Hunt Regional Healthcare system said that Hunt Regional Emergency Medical Center in Commerce would close at midnight because of a “critical COVID surge.” Staff is being redirected to the Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

“We are experiencing a public health crisis and need your help,” the Hunt Regional system said in a Facebook post. “If you have not been vaccinated, please do so as soon as possible. Wear a mask when indoors and avoid non-essential gatherings.”

Hunt Regional Healthcare said it hopes to reopen the Commerce ER by the end of the month. It urge people with medical emergencies to call 911 or go to ERs or clinics in Greenville or Quinlan.
