One of Oregon’s largest hospital systems -- Legacy Health -- announced it has paused all non-urgent surgeries for the next two weeks starting Monday, the same day a record 937 COVID-19 patients pushed the state’s hospitals to 92% of capacity.
Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations have broken the previous record 13 of the last 14 days, prompting Legacy leaders to say they must act to free up beds and staff in its six hospitals in Oregon and one hospital in Vancouver for critically ill patients.
Seriously ill or injured patients are sometimes transported from other parts of the state to Portland area hospitals, including Legacy, and concerns over hospital capacities reaching their limits are growing. While Oregon’s adult hospital beds statewide were 92% filled, they were 95% full in Region 1, which encompasses the metro area and Northwest Oregon coast. Beds in Region 1′s intensive care units were 93% filled, on par with the statewide figure.
Overall, 3,823 of the state’s 4,172 staffed hospital beds were full Monday, according to the Oregon Health Authority’s numbers.
The Portland area’s three other major hospital systems have yet to go as far as canceling “all” elective procedures. Oregon Health & Science University officials said they’ve been postponing some elective surgeries that require an overnight stay, if it’s safe to do so. Kaiser Permanente in Oregon said it’s delaying some non-urgent surgeries for the next 30 days.
Providence Health & Services said Monday that it hasn’t delayed any surgeries or procedures because of the COVID-19 surge.
“We assess our ability to perform scheduled surgeries on a day-to-day basis,” said spokeswoman Lisa Helderop, in an email.
All four of Portland’s large hospital systems are limiting or excluding visitors at their facilities. Legacy, OHSU and Providence aren’t allowing hospitalized adult patients any visitors except in a few circumstances, such as women giving birth. Starting Thursday, Kaiser Permanente in Oregon is limiting adult patients in single occupancy rooms to one visitor per a day and not allowing visitors in double-occupancy rooms, with some exceptions.
The visitor policies at Legacy and Kaiser Permanente specifically state that exceptions are allowed for patients who are near death.
