Gov. Kay Ivey has issued a state of emergency effective at 2 p.m. today for 27 counties in coastal and west Alabama in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Ida.

“As Hurricane Ida’s trek continues in the direction of Louisiana, we still expect the possibility of flooding and even spin-off tornadoes in portions of Alabama,” the governor said in a news release. “With a storm like this, we always want to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, which is why I have preemptively declared a state of emergency for our coastal and western counties. We will continue keeping an eye on the evolving system. I urge Alabamians and our visitors to stay weather aware.”

The counties under a state of emergency are Baldwin, Bibb, Choctaw, Clarke, Colbert, Conecuh, Dallas, Escambia, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Marengo, Marion, Mobile, Monroe, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Washington, Wilcox, and Winston.

The state of emergency declaration says there is a possibility of strong winds, flooding, and tornadoes that can damage property and cause power and utility outages. It says the Alabama National Guard should prepare to be activated and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency’s emergency operations center in Chilton County is activated.

The declaration includes a warning that price gouging during an emergency is unlawful.

Hurricane Ida: Tropical storm warning issued for Alabama coast; what else should we expect?

The city of Gulf Shores issued a press release this morning advising residents of the threat of heavy rainfall leading to potential flooding conditions, tropical storm force winds, potential tornadoes, and a likely 2-4 foot storm surge.

“Due to the significant rainfall expected from Hurricane Ida, residents living along the Fort Morgan Peninsula, Plash Island, other low-lying areas, and those residing in mobile homes, campgrounds, and RV parks, should be prepared to seek higher ground and protect themselves if necessary,” the press release said. “Motorists are discouraged from driving through flooded roadways and are advised to stay off the roads during the impacts from Hurricane Ida. If you come across roadblocks or barricades, do not attempt to drive around as the road may not be there.”
