State of Emergency in effect in parts of southern Madison County following flooded roads - Oneida Dispatch

pentingnus.blogspot.com

Wampsville, NY – A State of Emergency was in effect until Monday afternoon for parts of Southern Madison County after being first declared on Sunday due to heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Henri, along with extremely saturated ground causing flooding and flash flooding.

The towns of DeRuyter, Georgetown, and Eaton continued in the emergency state through much of Monday. The State of Emergency in Lebanon was lifted as of 8 a.m. Monday morning.

The following roads were closed due to flooding:

DeRuyter:

•Arnold Rd.

•Richmond Rd.

•State Route 13 between Sheds and Hunt Rd

Georgetown:

•Bronder Hollow Rd.

Eaton:

•Wescott Rd.

Please be cautious when driving in these areas. The roads that were closed are opening but still have some debris. Crews are still out cleaning up from Sunday’s flash flooding events.

Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Turn around, officials say, to avoid drowning. Only six inches of moving water can knock a person down, and one foot of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

A no unnecessary travel advisory in these areas of southern Madison County was in place Sunday until 7:00 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2021.

Editor’s note: This story was updated Monday afternoon to say that the State of Emergency has been lifted.

Oneida Lake travel advirosry

In addition to advisories issued in Southern Madison County, Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood issued a no unnecessary travel advisory on Oneida Lake beginning Saturday, August 21.

The water level in Oneida Lake is at dangerously high levels, causing shoreline flooding and hiding hazards in the water that are usually able to be seen. The unusually high water levels are hiding shore walls, rocks, and much more. Wake from passing boats could cause additional issues for businesses and homes along the lakeshore.

“We know that it is peak time for water recreation here in our community, but with the rain we just had and the anticipation of more rain and wind from Hurricane Henri, we are asking people to be cautious,” Hood said. “Please do not go out on the water in a boat at this time. We hope that the water levels will recede in a few days. This is for your safety, and that of our first responders.”

Madison County, as well as surrounding counties, and New York State are monitoring the water levels. When levels are safe once again the advisory will be lifted.
