Experts offer emergency evacuation planning advice - The Daily Camera

With several thousand people living in the evacuation and pre-evacuation areas of the 8,788-acre Cal-Wood fire in the Boulder County foothills, experts at ready.gov can offer tips on how to prepare in case you need to leave fast.

First, make sure you’re signed up for the emergency notification system at http://bouldercounty.org/safety/emergency/emergency-mass-notification-system to receive evacuation notices.

Before an emergency, it’s helpful to document the contents of your home with photos or videos, as well as to take photos of important documents like birth certificates and passports. Store those videos and photos offsite, in the cloud, or on a jump drive or a hard drive you keep somewhere else.

Pack a “go bag” for each person with items that include several changes of clothes, medications, a flashlight, food, water, a first aid kit, face masks and sanitizer. Keep a list of items you can’t replace so you can grab them quickly, if time allows.

For pets, recommendations include creating a small kit that includes food, water, a copy of your pet’s medical history, a supply of any daily medications and a toy or another familiar item. Photos of your animals also could be useful in case you need to ask someone else to try to rescue them.

Keep collars, tags and leashes near the door so everything is in one place if you need to leave quickly. An up-to-date microchip can help with reunification if you’re separated from your pet.

If you’re evacuated and don’t have a place to go that can accommodate pets, check with your local humane society. The Humane Society of Boulder Valley and the Longmont Humane Society are accepting companion animals in need of shelter during the Cal-Wood fire.
