'Covid-19 control should not sacrifice other urgent patients' - Korea Biomedical Review

The government recently ordered hospitals to open more beds for Covid-19 patients amid the pandemic's third wave.

However, such an excessive allocation of healthcare resources to Covid-19 patients could compromise emergency support for seriously ill patients with other illnesses, experts warned.

On Monday, the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine and the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases issued a statement, saying the fast spread of Covid-19 caused an imbalance in the demand and supply of emergency medicine. “We should not sacrifice our clinical service for patients with other serious illnesses,” they said in the letter of appeal.

“While Covid-19 is spreading, other patients still need emergency treatment for acute myocardial infarction, acute stroke, severe trauma, and bacterial sepsis. Urgent care for them is just as important as treatment for Covid-19 patients,” the societies said in the joint statement.

In a disaster situation, the nation needs to optimize the allocation of medical resources based on patient severity triage, they went on to say. In a pandemic situation, doctors cannot perform CPR as usual, the appeal letter said. “In particular, a recent study reported that in-hospital CPR on Covid-19 patients could not guarantee survival and discharge of them,” the societies said.

“Please refrain from forcing us to transfer Covid-19 patients for CPR or receive Covid-19 patients when we can’t isolate them.”

The societies also requested emergency physicians to receive patients actively.

“If it is possible to safely isolate and treat a Covid-19 patient or a person in self-quarantine in the emergency room, it is inappropriate to reject a patient citing the shortage of beds,” they said.

Suppose a person in self-quarantine needs emergency care due to abdominal pain or trauma. In that case, a hospital can treat the patient in a general quarantine room, they added.

“If a patient has suspected Covid-19 symptoms, the suspected patient requires an isolation in a negative-pressure room,” they said.
