Edgecombe County, N.C. — Sometimes, the problems Eugene Taylor faces at work seem to much to keep up with.
"There are days when you wake up and come into work and wonder - why did I do this?" said the director of the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter.
Last year, almost 700 dogs and 500 cats came through the shelter's doors. They also received 1,500 service calls.
The shelter only has room for 20 dogs and 12 cats.
In addition to the number of animals, the building was built in 1988 and has not been updated since.
The shelter needs an update, but it could cost millions of dollars. Last weekend, the sheriff's department held its first fundraiser for the project, bringing in $4,000.
There's a lot to do, but Taylor will continue to keep working hard for the shelter.
"You have to have a love for animals," he said. "I've always had that love for animals."
The shelter needs more people to adopt animals and give donations.
Donations can be made to the shelter via check, made payable to the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office. In the memo line write: Animal Shelter.
If you are interested in adopting a new pet, you can call the shelter at 252-641-4112 and make an appointment.
