CHESHIRE — For the past month, residents have been able to utilize a brand-new COVID-19 testing site, courtesy of Hartford HealthCare-GoHealth.

The Urgent Care facility, located at 1008 South Main St., has the ability to conduct three different COVID-19 tests: a rapid COVID-19 test, a COVID-19 PCR test, and a COVID-19 antibody test.

“The PCR test is the most accurate, with results in about two days. The rapid test gives results in about 15 minutes, and the antibody test will give results in two or three days,” said Dr. Eric Walsh, medical director for Hartford HealthCare GoHealth Urgent Care. “Since we’ve been open, we’ve been pretty busy, but we also have plenty of capacity so we are prepared for whatever happens.”

Currently, Connecticut has been experiencing a down-tick in positive COVID tests. Data provided by the state Department of Health shows the state’s positivity rate has remained around or below 3% for several weeks, and on Friday, March 5, the state reported a positivity rate for all tests administered that was under 2%. Hospitalizations are also down.

The trend has prompted Gov. Ned Lamont to recently ease mitigation requirements on business capacity, which will go into effect on March 19.

However, Walsh stressed that, while data has continued to look good and the vaccine rollout in Connecticut has thus far been successful, it is still important to get tested if you believe you have been exposed to the virus.

“Even as we get the vaccine out, we want to keep the viral load down, and getting tested is the best way to ensure you are not carrying it,” he explained. “We also don’t know how well the vaccine keeps you from spreading the virus, although the data is looking promising.”

For town residents looking to schedule an appointment, Walsh suggested using the Hartford HealthCare MyChart website to book a slot.

“To make sure that you get a spot and are seen, you should make the appointment online,” he said. “But we are open seven days a week and we will also treat non-COVID-related issues as well. We are still a functioning Urgent Care center.”
