FARMINGTON, N.Y. — Farmington Urgent Care — part of Thompson Health in Ontario County — is closing, ultimately, according to the leader of the organization because of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
“The whole reasoning for all of this is staffing,” said Michael Stapleton, president and CEO of UR Medicine Thompson Health.
The medical provider opened its doors more than 30 years ago, fought its way through the pandemic but now is forced to close — at least temporarily.
“This has a huge impact from entry level positions, all the way up, and we as a system are doing everything we can to prioritize where our staff goes so we can take care of our community members in greatest need,” said Stapleton.
Stapleton says about 200 people will lose their jobs for refusing the vaccine.
“We’re past discussing the mandate,” he said. “I mean it's done. It's done at the state level. It's done at the federal level. But what is so disheartening and we're dealing with this every day, is we're losing some incredible people. We are losing people who have served this community well beyond the pandemic and have done things for this community that are incredible, who are no longer going to be working in health care and that's very disheartening.”
Folks in the community have come to rely on Farmington Urgent Care, including Michele Rowe who is stopping in with her 8-year-old son.
“We like it because it’s so convenient,” said Rowe. “It’s fast. The service is always been really good here.”
But this mom doesn’t blame health care workers who choose to not get vaccinated.
“No, not at all,” she said. “It’s their choice, their body. I’m vaccinated. My son will get vaccinated when he can. That’s our choice.”
For now, Rowe and the other patients who go there will have to seek medical care elsewhere.
“So we then are making very difficult decisions of, how do we care for our community?” said Stapleton. “Our patients are still going to come to our emergency room. Our patients are still going to come to our two remaining urgent cares. So we have to have those departments staffed. So what are we doing, we're making very difficult decisions to postpone surgeries, to postpone procedures, so that we can flex those staff to the emergency room to the ICU to our med surg beds, because we're going to need all those beds were full right now. I mean, those patients aren't going away. Those patients are going to continue to come.
“…These challenges are not minimal. These are significant challenges, but we are doing the things necessary to care for our community.”
Stapleton says the plan is to reopen the urgent care as soon as it’s safely possible.
